We are immensely proud to announce that Marie Isabelle Poirier Troyano, one of our gallery’s most innovative artists, has been selected as a finalist for the 2025 Loewe Craft Prize. This prestigious prize highlights 30 of the world’s most exceptional contemporary artisans, whose creations push the boundaries of craft, redefining tradition through artistic ingenuity and technical mastery.
Marie Isabelle lives and works in Genalguacil, Málaga’s “pueblo museo”, a unique village known for its artistic heritage and dedication to contemporary art. Her connection to this inspiring environment is reflected in her work, which blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sensitivity.
This year’s finalists reflect an inspiring diversity of approaches. Marie Isabelle’s work stands out for its extraordinary blend of craftsmanship and artistic expression. Her selected piece is a vibrant textile sculpture, created using Japanese shibori dye-resistant techniques. Methods like ori nui, achieved by folding, and mokume, which relies on stitching into the fabric, bring her work to life with intricate textures and layers. Volume is achieved by folding the fabric in on itself, forming bands of rich orange, while delicate embroidery in dark blue and yellow, applied using a punch needle, adds contrasting detail.
Her bold and thoughtful use of color demonstrates a deep engagement with Japanese and Chinese art traditions, drawing inspiration from the color-field paintings of Chinese-French artists Chu Teh-Chun and Zao Wou-Ki. The result is a strikingly modern yet deeply rooted work that captivates with its beauty and complexity.
The Loewe Craft Prize is a celebration of contemporary craft’s transformative power, and we are thrilled to see Marie Isabelle’s extraordinary talentrecognized on this global stage.
