Shattered visions: Pablo Mercado
The fragile balance between remembering, reconstructing and reinterpreting.
Pablo Mercado's work focuses on exploring human memory and how the brain processes and stores recollections. His work combines complex installations with more traditional oil paintings. The Malaga-born artist has developed an interesting fusion between science, psychology and visual arts where his pieces combine pictorial and conceptual elements challenging the viewer's perception and stimulating reflection on the changing nature of our memories.
In "Shattered Visions" the artist immerses himself in a new series that distances himself from traditional fragmentation, focusing on the essential modification of the object. Mercado has taken the canvas as the main material and, using ingenious techniques, deforms and transforms it to metaphorically represent the neuronal plasticity associated with memory. In this new exhibition, Mercado achieves an effective fusion of both approaches, resulting in pieces that fall somewhere between painting, sculpture and installation. This bold choice triggers a unique aesthetic experience that confronts visitors with the fluidity and malleability of memories.
The exhibition culminates with an installation that occupies the gallery's black room where Pablo presents a large piece focussed on the plasticity of memory. Linked to the personal recollection of his father, the piece shows the impossibility of controlling the details of memory as well as the fear of modifying them. The fragile balance between remembering, reconstructing and reinterpreting.
Pablo Mercado poses a testament to the power of art to explore and express profound questions related to the human condition. His multidisciplinary approach and his ability to tackle complex issues make this exhibition a must-see event for all art and culture lovers.

Pablo MercadoLeteo, 2023Installation composed of water glasses suspended and grouped following the shapes obtained from the fMRI. Each glass has a different amount of water inside but they are suspended in such a way that the water level in each glass is at the beginning of the exhibition forming a perfect horizontal line with the rest. As time passes and the water evaporates, the original horizontal line is broken. The water in the glasses comes from the plot of land where his father was born. In this way Mercado speaks of the impossibility of controlling the details of stored memory, since every time we remember we are modifying that memory. And of the fragile balance that exists between remembering, reconstructing and reinterpreting.

Mercado's work achieves a perfect fusion between intricate installations and traditional oil paintings, creating a unique synthesis between science, psychology and visual arts.
In this exhibition, Pablo Mercado immerses us in a profound exploration of the malleability of memory through the distortion of the canvas, symbolising neuronal plasticity. This amalgam of painting, sculpture and installation offers an unparalleled aesthetic experience, challenging our perception of memories and their forms of manifestation.
The central piece of the exhibition, located in the gallery's black room, delves into the plasticity of memory through Mercado's personal recollections of his father. In this context, the inherent fragility of memory and the fear of its involuntary alteration is emphasised.
