Violence against women is a serious social, cultural and economic problem in Bangladesh where almost two out of three women have experienced gender-based violence in their lifetime and domestic violence is a common but under-reported occurrence.
The Bangladesh Suppression of Violence against Women and Children Act of 2000 sought to formalise the government's commitment to combat violence against women. This led, among other things, to the creation of shelters for women and their families.
