Juan José Botella (Moñino, Orihuela, 1978) is a sculptor and visual artist whose work explores the relationship between materiality and absence. Through the subtraction of material, his sculptures challenge the weight and presence of matter, giving emptiness a central role in composition. His work exists at the boundary between solidity and fragility, investigating how space and light define the limits of form.
He earned a degree in Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and later expanded his studies in sculpture and drawing in Madrid and Granada. Throughout his career, he has lived in different cities and worked as a sculptor in various countries, enriching his artistic practice with a diverse range of materials, techniques, and conceptual approaches. His most recent work delves into the connection between sculpture and drawing, exploring shadow as a plastic element.
Currently, he lives and works in Granada, where he balances his artistic practice with teaching. He is a professor of stone sculpture at the José Val del Omar School of Art, a role that allows him to share his expertise and reflect on sculptural processes through education.
His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Senyera Sculpture Prize, the Flechazo Prize at the FLECHA Contemporary Art Fair, the First Sculpture Prize of Villa de Ayllón, and the Sculpture Prize at the III International Biennial of Realism and Contemporary Figuration. He has exhibited in art fairs, galleries, and cultural institutions in Spain and abroad, participating in events such as the V Ciudad de Álora Sculpture Competition in Málaga and Poéticas de la Fragilidad in Benicasim.
His sculptures are part of collections and institutions in Spain, France, Lebanon, and Russia. Some of his works can be found in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Ayllón, the Complutense University of Madrid, and the Park of Dreams in Penza, Russia.
