Violence against women is a serious social, cultural and economic problem in Bangladesh, where nearly two out of three women have experienced gender-based violence in their lifetime, and domestic violence is a common, though largely unreported, occurrence.
Bangladesh's Suppression of Violence against Women and Children Act in 2000 sought to formalise the government's commitment to combating violence against women, leading, among other things, to the creation of shelters for women and their families.
